A drain auger, also known as a snake, is your last weapon if neither cleaning the trap or plunging to clear a plumbing blockage. The snake allows you to reach the clog and pull it out. Some snakes can be attached to an electric drill so that it can push through the clog. Because snakes can reach deep into drainpipes, they are very useful.

How to Use a Drain Auger

A rental center can rent an electric or manual drain auger for a small fee. It is very easy to use the equipment, but make sure you ask the dealer for instructions. This is the basic procedure:

  1. Place the snake’s end into the drain opening, and then turn the handle of the drum that holds the snake.
  2. Continue pushing the snake down the drain until it becomes resistant. To get the snake to bend around the trap beneath the sink, you may need to press the handle. Once you turn the curve, the snake will slide through the trap until it reaches the clog.
  3. Rotate the snake until it is free to flow into the pipe. Rotating allows the tip of the snake to attach to the block and spin it away. The auger head will entangle any solid objects. If the auger is not breaking through or twisting easier, you can pull the auger from the drain. You’ll probably pull out the clog.
  4. To ensure that your drain is clear, run water at full pressure for a few moments. Sometimes the clog is flushed down the drain. Other times it sticks to the snake.
